Bits Academy consists of three consecutive courses. Each course starts with an introduction, after which the students take part in intensive lessons and at the same time work on projects. The below infographic explains the content of these lessons (left) and projects (right) when clicking on the various boxes.
Getting ConnectedAn introduction to the computer, internet and design
Computer basicsThe students are introduced to the basics of the pc, they understand what a computer is and what it can be used for.
InternetThe students are introduced to the different functionalities of the internet. They understand how the internet can help them in their professional life.
DesignStudents are introduced to design and learn how it helps them to communicate a message. They see the possibilities of using design for their professional development.

GraduationBy the end of this course students are comfortable with using a computer and they are aware of the possibilities that lie in the field of digital design. At the actual graduation, students are evaluated by their projects and receive a certificate. The best students proceed to the following course.
Digital GarageAn exploration into the world of digital design and development
DesignStudents delve into design thinking and design processes. They get familiarized with the concept of ideation and get to know ways to visualise their ideas by prototyping. They also get to know how to work with digital tools to visualize their designs.
BrandingStudents learn the rules of brand identity and logo design. They also learn how to use various computer programmes to digitalize their new brand design.
Web developmentStudents get to know the basics of the world of web development. They get introduced to programmes and tools to develop websites.
MotionStudents get to learn the basics of video. They learn how to tell a story with moving images that fits the previously developed brand.
Made by meStudents build a website that deals with themes as tourism, fashion, news items, music, arts and sports. In addition, they submit a paper that describes the site's purpose and audience. It explains how the students are using the text, audio, video and images on the site and how they are consistent throughout the website.
Teamwork and project planningSkills needed to perform well in a team are at the core of these classes. These are mostly concentrated on (team)work ethics and skills related to project planning.
Web design and developmentDuring this period, students delve further into web design and development and get real comfortable with using the programmes to develop their website. Students will also learn firsthand from guest speakers from the field of web design or development.
Made by usStudents build a website in small teams where they either take the role of designer or that of developer. They make a website concept and additional design products for a business, an event or a campaign, starting from writing down the initial idea to defining the house style for the website.
My first assignmentDuring the client assignment, students practise what they learned in previous classes and projects, this time in a real-life situation. They choose the specialization they want to work in: web design, web development, graphic design, branding or (video) storytelling. The clients define the assignment and provide the students with valuable feedback.
GraduationBy the end of this course, students are familiar with multiple digital tools and programmes that are widely used in web design, web development, graphic design and (video) storytelling. They also have a keen eye for branding and can apply the fundamentals of design thinking in all of the work they do.
Media LabA specialization course in digital design and development
Students follow one of the below specializations. The lessons within specializations will either partly or fully be given by an expert from the field.
Web developmentStudents learn more about different programming languages and about programming for different types of media, such as mobile websites.
Web designStudents further develop their design skills and learn more about interaction design, designing for different media and responsive design.
Graphic designStudents further develop their design skills and learn more about layout, branding and print.
Motion designStudents further develop their editing skills. They learn about different methods of storytelling.
Mobile appsStudents develop skills specifically for creating Android Apps, such as mobile design, Java programming and Android programming.
This is meStudents further develop their personal style and interests and learn how they can communicate this with others. They evaluate different design forms and styles and identify their expertise. The students develop a digital design for themselves which will help them to put themselves in the market. This is not a portfolio – but it shows potential clients what they are good at.
Teamwork & project planningSkills needed to perform well in a team are further developed. These are mostly concentrated on communication, (team)work ethics and project planning.
Market research & financesStudents learn more about a doing market research and how to approach possible clients or partners in a professional manner. The students learn more about making a budget and how to develop a clear quote for their work.
One specializationEach team member fulfils their own role in the project. The team needs to have a good balance in the workload for each team member. There will be specialized lessons for each of the specializations.
Mixed mediaStudents create, design and develop a multimedia concept in small teams where they each take a different and complementary role that is determined at the beginning of the project. They combine the creation of a full-functioning website with additional design products for a business, an event or a campaign, starting from writing down the initial idea to the creation of all relevant media designs. The students also link their project with a real client, either by finding an existing event, campaign or business with whom they can collaborate or by doing a market research and integrate this in their designs.
Internship / client assignmentDuring an internship or a client assignment, students learn the ins and outs of working with an organisation or a company. Students learn to work with a planning and to communicate with clients, to listen to feedback and to come up with solutions. They apply their skills and knowledge within the field of expertise they have chosen.
Internship / client presentationAt the end of the internship or the client assignment, students give a presentation about both the content of the project(s) they have been working on as well as a personal reflection. The student needs to indicate what they have learnt, what they liked the most, what they found difficult and where they feel they need to grow.
GraduationBy the end of this course, students are professionals within the field of expertise they chose in the beginning. The combination of insights in design, their creative skills, their knowledge of how to work with a myriad of digital tools, and their social skills and entrepreneurial spirit makes them both competitive in the digital market space as well as of great value within the communities they came from. At the actual graduation, students are evaluated by their projects and their achievements during their internship and receive a certificate.
Each course provides the students with a toolbox full of knowledge, skills and attitude to enter the job market of digital media and design. This toolbox consists of four components:
We believe that creativity lies within every human being. Through the projects and exercises in the courses, students pull out all the stops and use creative thinking in all their designs.
We introduce the students to computer programmes and a mix of media so that websites, logos, printed artworks, videos or written documents are smartly made with a keen eye on design.
Bits Academy applies an industry-based learning experience. Students are trained in sensing business opportunities and learn how to present themselves in the job market.
In order to play a meaning- ful role in society, students learn to deal with issues they face while growing up, such as building confidence and self-esteem, communication skills and goal setting.
